
It's the question underneath every other question on our floor: how long until the battery is toast? The fear is a phone battery scaled up to car prices. The reality is a curve that behaves nothing like your phone's.
The curve: a dip, then a very long plateau
Packs typically lose a few percent of capacity in the first year or two as the chemistry settles, then flatten into a slow taper of roughly one percent a year. Fleet data across hundreds of thousands of EVs keeps confirming the same shape — cars crossing 200,000 miles with 85%+ of their original range are ordinary now, not outliers.
Sudden failure is rare, warrantied, and usually a single module rather than the whole pack. Gradual fade is the real story, and it's slow enough that most owners never notice a specific day it happened.
What the warranty floor means
Federal rules require every EV's pack be covered for at least 8 years or 100,000 miles, and manufacturers add a capacity floor — commonly 70% — under which they repair or replace. That warranty follows the car, not the owner, which quietly makes used EVs some of the best-protected purchases on the market.
Habits that help (and the one that hurts)
Three easy ones: set the daily charge limit around 80% and save 100% for trips, avoid parking for weeks at a full or empty pack, and don't make DC fast charging your everyday routine. Heat is the real enemy of lithium chemistry — one more advantage of the temperate Northwest.
None of this requires vigilance. Set the charge limit once in the car's menu and the pack quietly takes care of itself.
